Years ago, when I setup a site, I used Ajax Chat. This again was opensource but hasn't been updated for years. It can still be found as a download as I did indeed try it out once again. I thought everything was fine until I tried a chat room out for myself - no sound! This was not an easy fix as the sound worked off Flash which isn't supported by many browsers these days. Blow attempting to fix the software so I decided to try out others. I eventually settled for Blab. I liked this software as I could host it myself for one thing, which I like to do in most situations as it gives me greater control. There is a 'Pro' version called Blab Pro should I decide to fork out some dosh in the future but for such a site as this I should think it will never be something I will ever need to consider. The 'Pro' version does have lots of neat additions though - such as file upload. Still, the basis and FREE version works fine - and the sound is LOUD!Blab Chat Link (directly)Blab Chat Link (new window)
How I installed it on this site was to first of all create a page called 'chat.html'. Then, within this page, I gave 3 ways to run chat - DIRECTLY - IN A NEW WINDOW and IN A POPUP WINDOW. These 3 options should cover all needs and the merits of each choice was mentioned on the page. I also added some code of my own so that who is in the chat could be displayed elsewhere on the site (see link below).
